Just for more detail (and a bump), I have cleared my cache and I still can't get embedding code for the Flash player, just FB/Tw buttons that don't fit in the window.

ok, please try again now.
sounds like you were using/getting the "flash variant" of our new player
for item(s) with less than 4 playlist entries.

we had an issue there where the "sharing" popup couldn't fit and had, yah, lots of issues.

that should be fixed now!
can you let me know...

sorry for the troubles!

Ok. So the flash version 'sharing' window now fits but it still only has 'F', 'T' and a link to the archive.org site on it. It still doesn't have a flash-player-only embed code.

The embedding code taken from the 'embed this' link seems to default to the HTML5 version. On my computer the HTML5 version is a big, black square with no embedded player in it that does nothing. For obvious reasons I'm not installing that on my website if it does nothing at my end.

So the problem is still the same. :/

It seems to me that the easiest solution at both ends is working out how to either force the new flash player only when embedding, or to show the embed code that forces the old player only.

As for getting the 'right' solution, I don't know why the HTML5 doesn't work at my end, but if you want details on my software/hardware setup, just ask. Happy to help debug if I can.

consider me asking! 8-)
what's your OS + browser exhibiting the html5 fail?

and at least one /details/ link/url page would be great to start diagnosing.

we could even have you go to some known item and at a time when we're both around and i could see if i can figure any unusual issues/errors from this side.

Debian Squeeze - 2.6.32-5-amd64 kernel.
Iceweasel - 3.5.16

Not sure what you mean by this - every audio player page on archive.org yields the same results...?

ok.
i was about to say "well, i guess we don't support iceweasel" but then my coworker told me "oh, that is firefox, basically/really".

hmmmm.... firefox on unix is working for us, so I'm not sure what is going on for you...

I'm using Red Hat 5, Firefox 3.6.26 and get a black box. This occurs for every item I've checked so far (video, audio).

http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_Escape_Singles

Choosing a preference between flash or html5 does not make a different.

Choosing the old player works.

Is there a particular plugin required for the new player?

hey! can you try again and see if we back in business?
there was a bug for firefox and html5 video (sort of issue outside the player related to ogg files...)

also, i still continue to be unsure about firefox v3.6 that old (i thin that's ~Jan 2010) but it's worth a shot...

Hi,

When I check

http://www.archive.org/details/OTRR_Escape_Singles

I see a black box. If I switch to flash, though, it works.

I've checked a few other audio and video links and have the same results (flash works, html5 does not).

I'm fine with using flash.

Thanks!

Oh but this is redhat right?
Likely we see Iceweasel instead of firefox so I can widen our test

Can you paster your user agent or paste contents of
http://archive.org/details/testplay
?

The testplay URL gives me the IA header/menu and a link to terms of use, but nothing else.

My user agent is:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.26) Gecko/20120130 Red Hat/3.6-1.el5_7 Firefox/3.6.26

I've been trying the Escape link and other audio/video after cleaning out all cookies. The player has been using flash automatically.

so, it is working now for you?
thanks for the agent string -- we detect that to be this firefox 3.6 exception case, and if no "avpref" cookie set on a /details/ page request,
we set "avpref" cookie to "flash"
which will make flash kick in for our new player, instead of the html5.

so that *should* mean things are working for you now, pretty much every item. is that correct now?

Ok now I'm slightly confused. We should be catching "Firefox/3.6" and your agent. And you allow cookies since you can forum post. Maybe it was just the first reload of that page that failed but a second reload would be OK since cookie set on first load returns on 2nd+ load?
At least I think thats what should happen..

just the flash plugin.
it's possible the "agent detection" isn't "wide enough" inside jwplayer's inner JS code. i will try to see if i can figure anything out....
(thanks for the details OS + browser info!!)

yah, that should be a plenty good enough version (we require v9+)
and you said anyway the old player was working (also requires v9+)

hmmm......
wondering if maybe your firefox is confusing us to think it can play [video] tag so we're not giving you flash. but you said preferring flash didn't work either, hmm....

gonna see if i can make a "click here" page, possibly, for folks like you w/ issues to see if we can step thru answers of "do we think you have flash installed? do we think you can play it? do we think sample small item has a format you can play? do we think... " and so on...

Hi,

That worked for me. Here is the text output:

Do we think: you have loaded jwplayer? ... yes
...jwplayer parsed properly? yes
...you have flash? true
This appears to be your agent string: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.26) Gecko/20120130 Red Hat/3.6-1.el5_7 Firefox/3.6.26
Trying flash-only, default skin, mp4 only, minimal, embed:

(video of camels (?) played)

that seems to have played for you! correct?

and ya, camels is just a very short video (ideal for testing) random-ness from the oakland zoo ;-)
let's just think of it as a reference to O'Reilly books 8-)

ooh, woohoo! ok, now we're getting somewhere, *thanks* for your participation and basically helping us together to fix things! 8-)

i will start adding some more player tests like:
flash and html5
html5 and flash
our skin
our skin + our JS customizations (now i'm thinking the issue is happening in one of these for you, etc....)

awesome, thanks!
i'm still adding more checks....

i mean, the flash plugin, if the ogg can't natively play in your FFox -- and i *think* that's a pretty old ffox so won't be able to play [video] or [audio] tags? any consideration if it's years old to update or not ideal/possible?

alright, i'm trying to dive more into this now.
i'm *hoping* it's part of the jwplayer JS detection code that is thinking your browser *can* play the html5 variant, but then thinks none of the formats are playable. (I have a similar issue here at home with the PlayStation (3) so am hoping they both have slightly similar issues -- because my PS3 *can* play .mp4/.mp3 via flash plugin (old player works) but as pooping out for the new player, too...)
